Insta-Confused

September 15, 2016 By Holly Thompson Leave a Comment

Hi y’all!

A lot is new at our end, as you may have noticed by the little update our website has undergone.  We’ve added services that are on the new tabs at the top (which I’ll tell you more about later), we have a new logo (which is on its way), and even an Instagram page (which has been around for a little while, but I forgot to tell you about it).  It’s harder to see Instagram and Twitter with the new look of the website…just click on the three little dots at the top of the page and you can see where to go.  I’m super late to the social media thing altogether, but I understand Instagram enough to tell you how it works:

  1. I post a pretty picture of our kitchen renovation, which we did on an amazingly small budget and with our own hands.  I use appropriate hashtags and get some followers.
  2. I post a picture of a designer midcentury chair I found for $10 and reupholstered myself, which I incorporate into our existing decor.  I use appropriate hashtags and get some followers.
  3. All the first people unfollow me, because they only like white kitchens with marble, and have no interest in midcentury furniture.
  4. So I post a pretty vignette of my white kitchen with seasonal decor, which is my own work and not a re-post of someone else’s.
  5. I get unfollowed by the midcentury crowd, who are not interested in white kitchens and marble.
  6. Right before giving up, I post a picture of my kids homeschooling somewhere in my house and maybe one reading in my midcentury chair.  I tag it appropriately.
  7. I get followed by lots of homeschool moms and maybe some natural-y-inclined people.
  8. I get encouraged to not quit, and post a picture of a bathroom we’re working on, and tag it appropriately.
  9. I get pleasantly surprised by new followers who love bathrooms with high-end tile and concrete sinks.  I go to bed happy.
  10. I wake up, check Instagram, and find that there’s been a coup and I’ve been unfollowed inexplicably by a whole group of people, who seem to have gotten bored of me while I was asleep.

And that’s how it works.  And what I’ve also learned is that if you post the same picture of farmhouse-y decorative items (especially those with lots of white paint) from different angles a lot of times, that picture doesn’t even need to be yours to make hundreds of people fall in love with it.

Someone please explain to me how Instagram works.  (And make my little day by following me on Instagram).

Thank you very much.
